Authentic Mexican Talavera Pottery

First of all, authentic Mexican talavera pottery will always bear the initials or name of the artist who created it and the place of production. The place of production leads us to a second determining factor of authentic talavera. Only talavera produced in the Talavera Zone in the state of Puebla, Mexico is considered authentic. Regions included in the zone are Cholula, Tecali, Puebla and Atlixco all of which are in the state of Puebla, Mexico. To put it into an easier perspective, you can only get authentic talavera from the state of Puebla, Mexico, just as you can only get authentic champagne from Champagne, France.

The materials used in the production of talavera pottery are also determining factors of its authenticity. If the designs are flat to the surface it is likely that the talavera has been machine produced. Another indication to machine produced talavera, is a bright white background free of crazing. The background of authentic talavera will be a creamy white color, show crazing, and appear somewhat porous.
